Sikhulakahle or “We are Growing Well” was established in June 2008 after a Community Health Worker approached LETCEE as she liked the Siyabathanda Abantwana project in Matimatolo and wanted a similar programme in her own community, namely Mbuba. The Community Health Worker then brought the Inkosi and his representative to meet with LETCEE. This community member now serves as a representative on the LETCEE Board.

Sikhulakahle began with 10 Abahambi, however four months after the inception of the programme LETCEE was approached by the committee to ask whether they could appoint two more Abahambi as the community of Mbuba was vast and there were two areas were not being visited. These 12 Abahambi collectively reach 121 families and 257 children between 0 and 6 years of age. There are however many young children who come and join the sessions from neighbouring homes who are not officially a part of the programme. There are 467 adults, 248 children between 7 and 14 years of age and 9 children with disabilities in the programme. The Abahambi and Co-ordinator have completed their NQF Level One ECD training as well as the Dlalanathi Basic and Advanced Play Skills courses. There are 36 Buddies involved in the Sikhulakahle project.

The Sikhulakahle Toy Library was officially opened on the 24th of June 2011. The Abahambi exchange Toys twice a month and there is time set aside where they can bring the children they work with to come and play at the Toy Library. It is also open every afternoon after school so that the children from the community can come and play at the Toy Library.

LETCEE and the Mbuba Community would like to express our thanks to FNB who continue to support this community, bringing about great change in the lives of the children and families of Mbuba.
